Naturally Addressing Fibroids: A Guide for Women’s Health

Fibroids, noncancerous growths in the uterus, affect a significant number of women worldwide. As a women's hormone coach and womb wellness practitioner, I understand the impact that fibroids can have on certainly our physical but also emotional well-being. While medical interventions exist, they should not be the first line of defense. Women are seeking natural therapies to address fibroids and there are many alternative treatments that have shown promise, both in studies and through anecdotal evidence. In today’s blog post, we will explore the prevalence of fibroids, understand their causes, and delve into a range of natural therapies, that I have personally implemented with clients with positive results. By empowering ourselves with knowledge and natural approaches, we can strive for improved uterine health and overall wellness.

“Statistics indicate that approximately 70-80% of women will develop fibroids by the age of 50.”

Prevalence of Fibroids:

Fibroids are so much more common than most people realize. Statistics indicate that approximately 70-80% of women will develop fibroids by the age of 50 (1). These benign tumors can vary in size and number, and while they are generally noncancerous, they can cause discomfort, bloating, painful cramps, infertility challenges, and disrupt daily life. Fibroids are most commonly diagnosed in women between the ages of 30 and 40, and certain factors like genetics, hormonal imbalances, and ethnicity can influence their development.

Understanding Fibroids:

Fibroids are believed to result from a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Estrogen dominance, where estrogen levels are high compared to progesterone, has been linked to an increased risk of fibroids (2). Other factors such as obesity, diet, stress, and exposure to myriad of environmental toxins that we are bombarded with daily also contribute to fibroid development.

Natural Therapies for Fibroids:

While each woman's experience with fibroids is unique, there are several natural therapies that may help natural shrink and in some cases dissolve fibroids and support overall hormone health. Here are some evidence-based strategies that I use with my own clients that you may want to consider:

1. Proteolytic Enzymes like Serrapeptase: These enzymes have anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce fibroid size and alleviate associated pain and inflammation. Serrapeptase can assist in breaking down fibrin, a protein that contributes to fibroid growth (3). It is important to take these in high-enough doses on an empty stomach for them to work their magic. Working with a practitioner is recommended.

2. Castor Oil Packs: Castor oil, when applied topically, can promote circulation and support the body's natural detoxification processes. Regular use of castor oil packs on the lower abdomen may help reduce inflammation and provide relief from fibroid-related discomfort. Additionally, as part of a regiment it can also help to soften and break down fibroids. I recommend doing this several times a week, in the evening, & ideally paired with visualizing the growths shrinking. I love Queen of Thrones brand best for a mess free pack and quality organic castor oil, and I also happen to be an affiliate of their products.

3. Yoni / Womb Steaming: This traditional practice involves exposing the vagina to herbal steam, often containing herbs like motherwort, rosemary, or calendula. Anecdotal evidence from practitioners supports its use for promoting relaxation, increasing blood flow, and dissolving fibroids. But it’s not a one and done kind of thing. A protocol for fibroids requires a consistent steaming practice for 3-6 months before repeating an ultrasound to check results. My favorite herbs to use in a steam blend for fibroids are motherwort, yarrow, & cleavers.

4. Diet and Lifestyle: A well-balanced diet is key, especially one that focuses on whole foods, clean protein, fruits, vegetables, and fiber (at least 30g a day), can support hormone balance and overall health. Reducing the consumption of processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and refined sugars is also highly beneficial. I have seen women doing all the “right” things but who continued to drink alcohol have no changes or even see their fibroids grow. That is because alcohol increases the amount of estrogen in circulation and since fibroids are sensitive to estrogen, it is not good. Regular exercise, stress reduction techniques, and getting enough quality sleep are also very important for maintaining hormone balance.

5. Herbs & Supplements: Certain herbs, such as chasteberry, black cohosh, and milk thistle, have been traditionally used to support hormonal balance and address fibroid symptoms. However, it's essential to consult with a qualified practitioner before incorporating any of these into your regimen. I had a client who did more harm that good after months of taking an herbal supplement she heard might be good for her fibroids. Herbs and supplements are powerful and that’s why you want to know for sure if its the best choice for you or not before trying it. Additionally estrogen detoxing supplements like Sulforaphane, and DIM may help when used correctly.

6.Bio-identical Progesterone: Another one that you will want to work with an experienced practitioner to use correctly, however natural progesterone cream used topically has been shown to shrink fibroids and minimize symptoms of estrogen dominance. My favorite brand to use is Ona’s, which can be purchased from Amazon.

Addressing fibroids naturally requires a holistic approach that considers the unique needs of each woman. Aside from getting an ultrasound done initially to locate the fibroids, hormone testing may prove useful as well. While natural therapies like proteolytic enzymes, castor oil packs, yoni or womb steaming practices, and dietary modifications show promise in supporting hormones and reducing fibroid growth, working with a experienced practitioner can help you come up with the right protocol to support you specifically.
